COAST GUARD AUXILIARY “GOES GREEN” BY PARTICIPATING
IN RECYCLE DRIVE
Tampa, FL - U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 79 will participate in an Electronic Recycling Drive with the purpose of collecting toxic unused consumer electronic equipment.
Events by Amore, Tampa’s only certified GREEN production and catering experts, in conjunction with the 501 (C)(3) My Florida Green Council and with the support of Intercon Solutions, a national de-manufacturing company, will hold an Electronic Recycling Drive on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, 2009, at the Gandy Boat Ramp, 5108 West Gandy Boulevard in Tampa. Hours of drive will be Saturday from 8:00 AM till 4:00 PM and on Sunday from 8:00 AM till 2:00 PM.
The My Florida Green Council, a recycling advocacy group, along with Intercon Solutions, a company providing raw material recovery from home and boat electronics equipment, encourage all Tampa Bay residents to participate in the drive by bringing outdated or unused electronics equipment such as computer components, fax and copy machines, modems, radios, televisions, DVDs, compact disc players, clocks, GPS, fish finder units and desk and cellular telephones.
There is a nominal fee charged for the disposal of electronics that goes toward the expense of collecting, shipping and de-manufacturing equipment.
During the two day drive, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will provide free, non-punitive Vessel Safety Checks. A Vessel Safety Check is a 15-minute check of power, sail and personal watercraft vessels by experienced Auxiliary examiners to ensure that vessels comply with federal and Florida safety and equipment requirements. During the Safety Check, the Auxiliary will educate boaters and offer advisory statements of compliance and a distinctive decal will be awarded upon passing inspection. Items checked include numbers display, registration/documentation, safety and emergency devices, visual distress signals, fire extinguishers, navigation lights and overall vessel safety conditions. Please note citations will not be issued for non-compliances.
Founded in 1939, and recently celebrating its 70th anniversary, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian, all-volunteer arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. Its primary mission is to provide boating safety education and support for CG missions throughout the nation. In the Tampa Bay area, more than 400 Auxiliarists provide underway safety, port security patrols and perform other duties in support of Coast Guard missions. They are America’s Lifesaver Volunteers!
